Eye exams aren’t just for updating your glasses—they can reveal important clues about your overall health.
Our technology can help detect early signs of conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and even autoimmune diseases. That’s because the tiny blood vessels and nerves in your eyes can reflect changes happening elsewhere in your body.
With regular eye exams, taking care of your eyes means taking care of your whole health.
Common Eye Diseases & Conditions We Can Manage & Treat
Many eye conditions, like glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, can develop without noticeable symptoms early on. By the time you realize something’s changed with your vision, significant damage might already be done.
That’s why we’re passionate about being thorough with every eye exam. Using modern diagnostic technology, we can detect even small changes in your eyes or vision. Early detection means we can help manage or treat concerns effectively, supporting long-term healthy eyes and positive outcomes.
Cataracts
Cataracts occur when the lens in your eye becomes cloudy, like looking through a foggy window. This makes it harder to see, especially at night. Aging is the most common cause, as proteins in the lens deteriorate and clump together over time. Other causes include injuries, certain medications, and conditions like diabetes.
Early on, stronger prescription glasses or contact lenses and brighter lighting may help. In later stages, a simple surgery can replace the cloudy lens with a clear artificial one. It’s a safe, common procedure that can significantly improve your vision.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is called the “silent thief of sight” because it often has no early symptoms. It’s usually caused by pressure buildup in the eye, damaging the optic nerve that connects your eye to your brain. The exact cause isn’t always clear but is often linked to fluid drainage issues. Family history, age, and ethnicity can also increase risk.
Early detection is crucial to protect your vision. We use tests to measure eye pressure and check for optic nerve damage. If glaucoma is found, it can be managed with eye drops, laser treatments, or surgery to lower pressure and prevent vision loss.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a diabetes complication that damages the blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. These vessels can weaken, leak, or block, causing vision problems.
High blood sugar over time is the main cause, and the longer you have diabetes, the greater your risk. Regular diabetic eye exams are vital to detect early signs and provide treatments like laser therapy or injections to stabilize blood vessels and protect your vision. Managing blood sugar and overall health is key to preventing or slowing this condition.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration affects the macula, a part of the retina needed for sharp vision. It can blur or distort central vision, making it hard to see faces, read, or drive.
There are 2 types: dry and wet. Dry macular degeneration is more common and happens with age as the macula thins. Wet macular degeneration is less common but more serious, caused by abnormal blood vessel growth.
There’s no cure for dry macular degeneration, but vitamins and lifestyle changes can help slow it down. For wet macular degeneration, treatments like injections can stop blood vessel leakage and protect your vision.
Plaquenil Screenings
Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine sulfate) is a medication that helps manage certain autoimmune diseases, like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. It can be effective in controlling these conditions, but like any medication, it has potential side effects.
In rare cases, Plaquenil can damage your retina (the back of your eye that helps you see). This can lead to vision changes that you might not even notice at first.
Plaquenil screenings can help detect early retinal changes, often before symptoms appear. By closely monitoring your eye health, we can help protect your vision while you continue to benefit from Plaquenil.
Who is at risk for vision loss with Plaquenil?
Some people are at a higher risk of retinal damage when using Plaquenil. Here’s what to watch for:
- Taking Plaquenil for 5 years or more
- Using doses higher than recommended
- Taking other retina-toxic medications, like tamoxifen
- Having pre-existing retinal conditions
- Kidney or liver disease
- Being over the age of 60
If any of these apply to you, it’s important to stay proactive. Talk to your eye doctor and healthcare provider about how to manage your risk.
How often do you need to be screened?
Your eye doctor will recommend a screening schedule that’s right for you. This will depend on factors like your dosage, how long you’ve been taking Plaquenil, and any other health conditions you may have.
Diagnostic Technology
At Stonebridge Eye Care, we use modern technology to evaluate your vision and eye health. Our thorough approach helps us detect subtle changes and provide accurate insights about your eyes. We believe in empowering you to be proactive about your eye care, so we take the time to explain the findings and answer all your questions.
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is like an ultrasound for your eyes. It uses light waves to create cross-sectional images of the retina’s layers (light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye). OCT scans help your eye doctor detect early signs of glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. The scans are quick, noninvasive, and provide detailed information.
Optomap Wide-field Retinal Imaging
The optomap is like taking a panoramic picture of the back of your eye. It captures a wider view than traditional retinal photography, providing more details to help detect potential problems that might otherwise be missed. Retinal imaging detects conditions like diabetic retinopathy and retinal tears. It’s quick, noninvasive, and helps monitor changes to eye health over time.
Visual Field Testing
A visual field test helps us map your peripheral vision—the range of sight you see to the sides or “corner of your eye.” During the test, you’ll focus on a central point and indicate when you see flashes of light appearing in your peripheral vision. The results help us identify any blind spots or areas of reduced vision, which can be a sign of glaucoma or neurological conditions.
