What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye occurs when your eyes fail to produce enough quality tears to stay lubricated. Tears are a blend of water, oils, and mucus that work together to keep your eyes smooth, clear, and comfortable.

One common cause is a lack of natural oils from the meibomian glands in your eyelids. Conditions like blepharitis, rosacea, or poor eyelid hygiene can block these glands or reduce tear production, causing dryness and discomfort.

Personalized Dry Eye Relief: Our Treatment & Therapy Options

Dry eye is a complex condition influenced by many factors, from lifestyle habits to environment. The good news is effective management is possible, and we’re here to help.

At Stonebridge Eye Care, we know that no 2 pairs of eyes are the same. That’s why we take a personalized approach to dry eye care, tailoring our treatments to suit your needs.

We’ll start by having an open conversation about your symptoms and concerns. From there, we’ll complete thorough testing to uncover the root cause of your dry eye. With this information, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan, helping you find relief and protecting your eye health.

Punctal plugs are tiny, biocompatible devices placed in the tear ducts (puncta) to help preserve your natural tears. The plugs are like tiny stoppers that reduce tear drainage, keeping your eyes moist for longer. They can be particularly helpful for people with moderate to severe dry eye who haven’t found relief with other treatments.

Multiple punctual plug options are available, from temporary (naturally dissolving) to semi-permanent (medical-grade silicone or acrylic).

Meibomian gland expression is an in-office procedure that helps unclog and express the glands in your eyelids that produce the oily part of your tears. By clearing these glands, we can improve the quality of your tears and reduce dry eye symptoms.

Meibomian gland expression is often recommended for people with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), a common cause of dry eye.

Eyelid debridement involves carefully removing debris, bacteria, and biofilm from the eyelids. It promotes healthy eyelid hygiene, reduces inflammation, and can improve the effectiveness of other dry eye treatments.

Eyelid debridement can help people with inflammatory eyelid conditions like rosacea and blepharitis or those who experience excessive crusting or buildup along the lash line.

We provide various eye drops and gels, from over-the-counter solutions to medicated options, to meet different needs:

  • Artificial tears: Designed to lubricate and soothe dry eyes, offering quick, temporary relief.
  • Anti-inflammatory drops: Formulated to reduce swelling, helping improve tear flow.
  • Tear-stimulating drops: Encourage your eyes to produce more natural tears for longer-lasting hydration.

Heated eye masks offer a simple, effective at-home treatment to soothe dry or tired eyes. The gentle warmth helps improve blood circulation to the eyelids and stimulates the meibomian glands, promoting healthier tear film quality.

Regular use can alleviate dry eye symptoms, reduce strain, and relieve fatigue. Eye masks also provide a relaxing therapy for your eyes.
